Karen Levine

Executive Editor

I am delighted to have joined the University of Chicago Press to oversee acquisitions in art and ancient studies—lists previously shepherded by Susan Bielstein, who retired in October 2022.

I am looking forward to sustaining and building upon Chicago’s long tradition of publishing influential, beautifully crafted books on the histories of art and design; social, cultural, and material issues in antiquity; and ancient literature in translation. Please watch this space for future updates describing fresh topics and areas of interest.

With regard to film studies, although Chicago has historically published in this area, please note that we are not presently considering new books in this field. Exceptions may occasionally be made for trade books and scholarly studies about film in the context of literature or contemporary art.

I come to the Press with thirty years of experience in trade, scholarly, and museum publishing, including positions at Getty Publications, University of California Press, Prestel, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and HarperCollins. I studied English and art history at Occidental College and hold an MA in art history from San Francisco State University.

Prospective authors are encouraged to consult our submission guidelines. We also provide an overview about publishing with Chicago here.
