Ana Kostova

The Space of Colour

This volume comprises artist Ana Kostova’s most important pieces from recent years—a dialogue between form, history, and time.

Ana Kostova’s artworks are known for their play with color and form, as well as her unique approach—large-format image grounds are cut with a milling machine, then sanded and painted by hand. The results are unique in technique and unique in effect—precise, brightly colored, and richly varied. At times, these impressive “cutouts” appear more like a painting, at other times, more like a sculpture, or even a kind of screen standing in the room.

Her extraordinary use of color merges with the open structure of the works: Kostova creates harmonious overall compositions, interweaves different planes, and allows her pieces to merge with the surrounding architecture. Her spatially expansive objects are inspired by Roman floor mosaics in her native Bulgaria as well as by architectural details or natural elements. The creative process, ranging from digital sketches to painting by hand, is central to her work and is captured in full in this stunning new volume.
