New Housing in Zurich

Typologies for a Changing Society

Swiss architecture has come to be associated with iconic buildings and celebrated architects and firms like Peter Zumthor, Marion Botta, and Herzog & de Meuron. Yet there is a wide variety of other projects that contribute to a distinctly Swiss architecture, including private homes and housing developments. New Housing in Zurich looks specifically at the cooperative housing developments in the city of Zurich, as well as several examples outside the city’s boundaries.

Over the past two decades, the image of cooperative housing developments have changed significantly. Public funding and open competitions have created an environment in which a large number of highly innovative cooperative housing developments could be realized in Zurich. Many now also serve as models for how to meet the constantly increasing demand for urban housing. The first comprehensive survey on this topic, New Housing in Zurich features fifty projects, copiously illustrated with plans and photographs. Essays on the history of cooperative housing in Switzerland and its impact on urban development, new urban and architectural concepts, and social dynamics, among other topics, round out the book.
