Sounding the Book

{Unwritten Chapter}

If my book charts a series of intermedial interactions – manuscript turned into print, manuscript alongside print, image into text and back again – one of the things it left out was a reflection on the way oral networks sustained bookish communities. I never got around to doing this, but there are numerous forms of oral performance one could look at in how they impacted bookish communities, including salons, public lectures, shifting space of the theatrical performance, and of course the aggrandizement of the human storyteller (the minstrel, old woman, or landlord).
