This edition makes available for the first time in Spanish the major definitive work, first published in 1970, on The Spanish Drama of Pathos. The study surveys the dramatic aspect of Spain’s movement towards modern thinking or "enlightenment". The work falls into two volumes. The first ("High Tragedy") evaluates the better known authors, the scholar-dramatists, with special reference to their European context and to the Spanish activity of the period in translation, opera and parody. Volume 2 ("Low Tragedy") deals with the little-known playwrights who were, nonetheless, of great historical importance for their uninhibited development of foreign social theses, and for their initiative in experimenting in new dramatic methods. This monumental study remains the best-known work in its field.
