At different moments throughout the history of American modernism, avant-garde artists have enthusiastically embraced the work of their self-taught peers. Beginning with Charles Sheeler and fellow New Yorkers in the aftermath of World War I up through Robert Gober, Cindy Sherman, and Kara Walker in recent years, established artists have repeatedly advocated for those on the art world’s peripheries. Their fertile intersections have played a determining if little studied role in shaping the narratives of American modernism. Outliers and American Vanguard Art features more than 250 works by schooled and unschooled artists germane to this previously uncharted history and eight essays that variously address issues at its core.

In today’s increasingly inclusive and diversified art world, work made by self-taught artists is frequently assimilated by the mainstream, integrated on a level playing field alongside that of trained practitioners without distinction or apology, and with little regard to the ways that markers of difference may determine differently. The concluding essays in this book consider curatorial and critical strategies that aim to reconcile the long-held schism between mainstream and margins by generating dialogues that challenge hegemonic social and cultural norms.
Lynne Cooke is senior curator, special projects in modern art, at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. She has served on the editorial board of The Burlington Magazine since 1988.
