[Press]: Announcing Stephanie Smith as co-editor of Afterall

The University of Chicago Press is pleased to announce that the Smart Museum of Art and the University of Chicago Open Practice Committee have formally joined the journal Afterall as editorial and research partners. In addition, Stephanie Smith, the Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Smart Museum is starting her first year as an editor of the journal.
The Smart and the OPC join MHKA, Antwerp and UNIA arteypensamiento, Seville, along with the University of Chicago Press as partners. This relationship between the Smart Museum and Afterall reflects the breadth and international nature of the entire Afterall organization, and is central to its work as a world class contemporary art research and publishing organization.
Stephanie Smith is one of Chicago’s leading interpreters of contemporary art. Having joined the Smart Museum in 1999, she also serves as an affiliate member of the University of Chicago’s Department of Visual Arts, and as a founding member of its Open Practice Committee.

Ms. Smith held previous curatorial positions at Rice University, where she earned her M.A. in art history, and at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Her work focuses on socially engaged public practice and on issues of art and sustainability, most notably in the exhibitions and publications Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art (2005), Heartland (2009), and Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art (2012, on national tour through 2015).
