Open Access Options

The University of Chicago Press offers two options for authors who wish to provide readers with unrestricted online access to their published articles.

Authors may place the final accepted manuscript in a non-commercial, open-access repository no earlier than six months after publication for science, technical, and medical journals, or twelve months after publication for all other journals.
The University of Chicago Press supports Green Open Access, as defined by the RCUK Open Access Policy, under the Press’s Guidelines for Journal Authors’ Rights.

Authors can make the electronic version of their articles freely available to the public in perpetuity for a fee.* The fee varies by journal; contributors should consult the Information for Authors on the webpage of the journal they are considering.
*UK authors should note that this option cannot be used to comply with RCUK regulations, as the University of Chicago Press does not allow commercial reuse. Contact your department or research organization for approval before choosing the Gold Option. To learn more about the University of Chicago Press’s open access policy and licensing restrictions, please read our Authors’ Rights FAQ.

More information on these options, as well as copyright and fair use, is available on in the Instructions for Authors for each journal.
